严格地说,ignore连同ignoramus都源于拉丁语ignorare'not to know’。 词典编纂者约翰逊(Samuel Johnson,1709-1784)在他所编的《英语辞典》中谈及该词时这样写道“This word Boyle endeavoured to introduce, but it has not been received.”(虽然玻意耳力图引进该词,但迄今未获承认。)=来源于拉丁语中由否定前缀i-和基本动词gnor.are(知道)组成的复合动词i.gnor.are(不知道)。
